March 20 - World Oral Health Day 2019

World Oral Health Day 2019On the initiative of the FDI World Dental Federation, World Oral Health Day (WOHD) is celebrated worldwide on March 20 every year.

This international day is designed to popularize around the world problems related to oral health, and the importance of oral hygiene to care for all people, regardless of age. Almost 90% of the world's population suffers from oral diseases during their lifetime, and many of these problems can be avoided with increased support from the government, health, society and every citizen. This date was not chosen by chance.

The main strategic goals of dental health are:

  • older people should have a total of 20 natural teeth at the end of their lives to be considered healthy;
  • children should have 20 teeth in a temporary bite;
  • healthy adults should have a total of 32 teeth and 0 carious cavities.

Expressed on a digital basis, this can be translated as 3 goals of at least 20, or 3/20, hence March 20.

For the first time, the Republic of Belarus joined the World Health Day in 2016. The Dental Service of the Republic held mass events in organized children's groups (in schools and kindergartens), conducted free examinations in polyclinics, and provided hygiene products that were provided free of charge by companies to producers. The events were supported by the mass media, interviews with medical specialists were conducted, articles were published, information materials were posted on the websites of health organizations and much more.

Diseases of the teeth and periodontal pathology are widespread among the population of Belarus. Annually, 14-15 million applications for dental care are made to dentists, more than 8.5 million seals are filled and 500-550 thousand dentures are made. However, primary prevention of major dental diseases can significantly improve dental health.

In 2016, the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus of March 14, 2016 No. 200 approved the State Program "People's Health and Demographic Security of the Republic of Belarus" for 2016-2020. In order to improve dental health and implement the State Program, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Belarus from 11/23/2017 № 1338 approved a program for the prevention of major dental diseases among all categories of the population of the Republic of Belarus for the period from 2017 to 2020.

The prevention program covers the entire population of the Republic of Belarus, defines the goals and expected results of implementation.

The foundation of the Prevention Program was the world's leading experience and the results of the implementation of previous prevention programs in the country.

The main points to which the Prevention Program focuses are:

  • careful and correct oral hygiene at least 2 times a day (morning and evening after eating);
  • use for oral hygiene of fluoride-containing toothpastes in concentrations according to age recommendations: children under 6 years of age with a fluoride concentration of 500 ppm the size of a small pea, over 6 years old, adolescents and adults with a fluoride concentration of 1100-1500 ppm in size 1-1.5 cm;
  • regular, at least 2 times a year, visit the dentist with a preventive purpose;
  • proper nutrition at least 3 times a day, eliminating the excess carbohydrate content, especially sugars, and their prolonged stay in the oral cavity.

Good results in the prevention of dental diseases are the use of food-grade fluorinated (iodinated-fluorinated) salt in cooking.

A healthy oral cavity and a healthy body go hand in hand. Maintaining oral health is critical to the proper functioning and maintenance of the overall health and quality of life. A healthy mouth allows you to talk, smile, smell, eat, touch, chew, swallow and transmit a lot of emotions with confidence and without pain, discomfort and illness. Regardless of your age - 5, 25, 65 or 85 years - oral health is vital for your overall health and well-being.
